Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass.  – The Brandeis University women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at Gordon Field.

The Judges, who received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division III Poll,  improve to 4-0-3 on the season. The Bears slipped to 2-3 with the setback. Brandeis holds a 12-1-1 advantage in the all-time series which dates back to 2007.

Junior defender Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) found the back of the net for the second straight game to stake Bridgewater State to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. Dewhurst buried a shot into the top right corner of the net from 35 yards out off a short restart pass from senior forward Audra McDuffie (Millbury, Mass.).

The Bears clung to the 1-0 lead until the 65th minute. Junior defender Rachel Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) sent a long volley into the box and onto the foot of freshman forward Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India). Raju dribbled to the right side of the six and beat the oncoming BSU netminder with a shot inside the left post.

Senior forward Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz.) completed the comeback win for the Judges in the 79th minute. A header attempt by freshman midfielder Ali Penella (Stamford, Conn.) off a corner kick hit the bottom of the crossbar and the Bears were able to clear the ball off the line. The ball, however, came out to Lenhart who fired a shot that deflected off a BSU defender near the right post and trickled over the goal line.

The Judges held a decided 27-6 shot advantage for the game as well as a 13-2 edge in corner kick attempts.

Junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla.) and freshman Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla.) split the game between the pipes for Brandeis. Bassen played the first half and made one save. Logan did not face a shot in her 45 minutes of action.

Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) turned aside four shots in goal for the Bears.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Fitchburg State University on Friday night at seven o'clock. The Judges are off until next Tuesday night when they travel to Lesley University for an eight o'clock game with the Lynx.
