Women's Soccer Blanks Worcester State in MASCAC Opener, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore goaltender Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) made nine saves and senior defender Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the game's only goal to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Stadium. The game marked the MASCAC opener for both teams.

The Bears improve to 2-2 (1-0 MASCAC) on the season while the Lancers fall to 0-3-1 (0-1 MASCAC). Bridgewater State is 20-18-7 all-time versus Worcester State since the two team first met in 1991.

Dewhurst potted her first goal of the season just 44 seconds into the second half to break a scoreless tie. Off a restart, junior midfielder Mia Chrisafideis (Marlborough, Mass.) slipped a short pass to Dewhurst who blasted a shot just under the crossbar from 33 yards out.

The Lancers had a chance to notch the equalizer in the 69th minute but freshman midfielder Olivia Magierowski's (Brimfield, MA) shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and the Bears were able to clear the ball off the line.

BSU freshman forward Yessica Duran (Gardner, Mass) hit the post just over five minutes into the game for the best scoring chance of the first half.

Levesque recorded her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career.

Sophomore netminder Mallory Dupuis (Leominster, Mass.) turned aside three shots between the pipes for Worcester State.

The Lancers held a 14-9 shot advantage and attempted the only corner kick of the afternoon.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Brandeis University on Tuesday night for a seven o'clock game with the Judges. The Lancers head to Keene State College on Wednesday evening to take on the Owls at 6:30.
