Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to #18 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a tough 2-1 setback to #18 MIT on Saturday afternoon at Roberst Field.

The host Engineers, who are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Division III Poll, improve to 1-0-1 on the season with the win.

MIT led 1-0 at the break as sophomore midfielder Alice Vranka (Bronxville, N.Y.) found the back of the net in the 33rd minute with sophomore forward Sean Luk (Bel Air, Md.) picking up the assist. The Bears were held to just one shot over the first 45 minutes.

The Engineers expanded the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute on a Luk strike.

The Bears spoiled the shutout bid with just 18 seconds remaining in the contest. Sophomre defender Lauren Sellmayer (North Easton, Mass.) sent a corner kick directly in front of the net. Senior midfielder Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) deflected the ball to senior forward Audra McDuffie (Millbury, Mass.) who one-timed a shot into the right side of the cage.

MIT finished with a 14-5 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-3 edge in corner kick attempts.

Senior goalkeeper Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) made one save in the win for the Engineers. Sophomore Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) turned aside five shots between the pipes for the Bears.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Suffolk University on Thursday night at seven o'clock, while the Engineers travel to #22 Trinity College on Tuesday evening for a six o'clock game with the Bantams.
