Area Colleges: Bridgewater State’s Alana Vincent Ends Soccer Career in Style

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior Alana Vincent of Taunton has once again earned All-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference honors.

After making the first team as a freshman and the second team as a junior, Vincent was back on the first team this season after being the top offensive player in the MASCAC.

The only time the Taunton High graduate did not make the all-conference team was 2017 when she suffered a season-ending ankle injury after eight games.

Vincent scored 35 goals with 13 assists for 83 points in 63 career games and finished fourth on BSU’s all-time list in both goals and points.

She ranked first in the MASCAC this season with a career-high 18 goals and 43 points and was tied for third with seven assists. Vincent was tied for third nationally in Division 3 with nine game-winning goals.

Vincent showed the ability to score right away as a freshman, leading the team with six goals and 13 points, and had four goals and four assists in eight games before getting hurt as a sophomore. She returned last season and contributed seven goals and an assists before finishing off her career in style.

“It’s just her tenacity to attack the goal,″ said Bears coach Yasmina Carvalho. “Her mindset is nothing but scoring goals. Unless she has a wide open teammate or someone else is demanding the ball and has a better shot, she’s going to go for it herself.

“She can hit her shot from anywhere, from 40 yards out. Her ability to turn and strike so quickly is probably what is so dangerous about her shot.″

Carvalho had high hopes for Vincent when she arrived at Bridgewater State in 2016, and those expectations were met.

“When she came in, we knew we were going to get someone who actually knew the game,″ said Carvalho. “We get a lot of athletic players in our program. With her coming in, we knew we were getting a true soccer player and she could dominate throughout her four years.

“She got so much better. She kept working and working. When she came in freshman year, she wasn’t as physical. We told her she had to be more physical in college soccer. Throughout the years, she got more and more physical and was able to hold off defenders and get the shot that she wanted.″

The injury in 2017 was a setback as Vincent missed the final 11 games after being injured in late September.

The ankle was not fully healed the next season, according to Carvalho, but she had no problems in her senior season.

“She knew her ankle was healed and she was ready to dominate everyone on the field,″ said Carvalho. “There was a different look in her eyes. It had a lot to do with it being her last year. A lot of seniors have that feeling that I’ll never play on this field again, never wear this uniform again and she took full advantage of that feeling and ran with it.″

The 18 goals by Vincent this fall tied for the third most in a season at BSU behind Kaitlin Lamothe (22 in 2008) and Kathy Conley (19 in 1992). Her 43 points rank fourth on the Bears’ all-time list.

Two other BSU players joined Vincent on the All-MASCAC first team.

Senior defender Kaitlyn Bongarzone (one goal, three assists) and sophomore midfielder Cassie Brown (two goals) were honored for the first time in their careers.

Named to the second team were senior goalkeeper Kellie Souza and junior defender Samantha Tomaszewski.

Souza had 21 wins and 10 shutouts with a 1.58 goals against average in 40 career games. Tomaszewski had a goal and four assists.

Antonellis Earns Honor: Stonehill College senior back Michaela Antonellis was chosen to a pair of All-America second teams by the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association and Synapse Sports.

It is the second time in her career that Antonellis has received All-America recognition. She was a key part of the defense that was ninth nationally, allowing 1.19 goals per game.

Teammate Andrea Caradonna, a freshman back, made the Synapse Sports Division 2 all-rookie team. She started all 17 games and had a goal and an assist.

Carney top player: Bridgewater State senior Ryan Carney of Easton was named the MASCAC men’s basketball player of the week.

Carney averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in three games, shooting 53 percent from the floor. He had 30 points against Wheaton, 21 points against Dean and 29 points against UMass Dartmouth.

Through 89 career games, Carney has scored 1,222 points to rank 17th on the program’s all-time list entering Thursday night.
