Women's Soccer Blanks Framingham State, 5-0

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory over Framingham State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC)) contest on Saturday at Maple Street Field.

The Bears improve to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC, while the host Rams fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Sophomore forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) potted a pair of goals to lead the BSU offense, while senior goaltender Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) turned aside four shots to record her fourth win of the 2017 campaign and second shutout. DeSousa was also credited with her first career assist.

Vincent opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. The goal was set up by a long throw-in down the right sideline from junior defender Kassidy Campbell (Norton, Mass.). Vincent collected the ball down near the goal line, dribbled in and beat the FSU netminder with a shot inside the far post.

Sophomore forward Amelia Burke (Plymouth, Mass.) scored on a breakaway in the 41st minute to extend the BSU lead to 2-0. A long punt by DeSousa down the middle of the field got past the Framingham defense. Burke collected the ball, dribbled in on the keeper and flicked a shot inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

Senior forward Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) made it a 3-0 game in the 53rd minute. Off a restart, sophomore defender Kaitlyn Bongarzone (Mansfield, Mass.) sent in a long service that got behind the Framingham defense. Pepin corralled the ball at the top of the 18 and flicked a shot over the goaltender and into the back of the net.

The Bears took advantage of a bad punt to extend the lead to 4-0. Sophomore midfielder Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) slipped a short pass to Vincent who beat the keeper with a shot just inside the left post from 28 yards out.

Senior midfielder Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.) capped off the scoring in the 75th minute as she headed home a corner kick served into the six by Burke. For Simas, the goal marked her team-leading sixth of the season.

The Bears held a 32-10 shot advantage for the game.

DeSousa moved into a tie for fourth place on the Bears' all-time wins list as she now has 21 victories in her three seasons with the Bears. Former goaltending standout Kristen Young also recorded 21 wins from 1997 to 2000.

Junior Kirsten Hansen (Framingham, Mass.) was busy between the pipes for Framingham State as she made 13 saves.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening for a seven o'clock non-conference game with the Corsairs. The Rams entertain non-league foe Roger Williams University on Wednesday afternoon at four.
