Yasmina Carvalho Named MASCAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University head coach Yasmina Carvalho has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Soccer Coach of the Year.

In 17 games this season, Carvalho has guided her squad to an overall record of 7-5-5 (.559) with a 4-1-2 (.714) conference mark. The Bears eclipsed the program record for shutouts in a season with eleven, and have allowed just one goal in eight games against MASCAC teams.

Under Carvalho's direction, four players garnered All-MASCAC honors in 2016 including conference player of the year, Lauren DeSousa.

Seeded third in this week's MASCAC Tournament, the Bears posted a 1-0 quarterfinal round victory over Fitchburg State University on Tuesday to advance to the tournament semifinals. Bridgewater travels to #2 seed Westfield State University on Friday night to take on the Owls at seven.

In three seasons as the BSU skipper, Carvalho's coaching record stands at 23-24-8 (.491) with a conference regular season mark of 12-7-2 (.619).

Carvalho spent four seasons as a student-athlete on the Bears’ women’s soccer team as she anchored the defensive backfield from 2006 to 2009. Carvalho was a three-time All-MASCAC selection and two-year captain. She graduated from Bridgewater State in 2010 with a degree in physical education and currently teaches at Brockton High School.

Notes: Carvalho is the Bears' first MASCAC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year since Andrea Zeigler-O'Connor earned the honor in 2008. Zeigler-O'Connor also garnered MASCAC Coach of the Year accolades in 2001.
