Women's Soccer Battles Worcester State to 1-1 Overtime Draw on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's soccer team clinched the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular season title outright as the visiting Lancers tied Bridgewater State University, 0-0, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.

The Lancers, who did not allow a goal in conference play this season, see their record go to 7-6-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the MASCAC. The Bears are now 6-5-5 on the year and 4-1-2 in conference competition.

Worcester is the top seed in next week's MASCAC Tournament and will receive a first round bye. Bridgewater is seeded third and will host a first round game on Tuesday night against #6 Fitchburg State University. Game time is slated for seven o'clock.

BSU junior goaltender Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) made six saves as she set the program record for shutouts in a season. DeSousa increased her season shutout total to 9 ½ as she eclipsed BSU Hall of Famer Tracey Ullathorne's previous mark of nine set back in 1993. DeSousa is also second all-time at Bridgewater State with 16 ½ career shutouts.

The Bears held a 20-11 shot advantage for the game including a 14-7 edge after halftime. Corner kicks were 8-5 in favor of the visiting Lancers.

Worcester senior netminder Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, Mass.) made seven saves to record her seventh solo shutout of the season.

BSU freshman forward Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) led all players with 12 shots with five on frame.

Junior forward Nicole Simas (Dartmouth, Mass.) had the best scoring opportunity of the day for the Bears in the 27th minute. With the goalie out of position, Simas' shot at an empty net was blocked by Lancer senior defender Nicole Parenteau (Chicopee, Mass.).

Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Drew Guay (Fall River, Mass.), Amanda Leite (New Bedford, Mass.) and Marisa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.). The three upperclassmen were playing in their final regular season home game.
