Capone Nets Game-Winner as Women's Soccer Edges UMass Dartmouth, 2-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior midfielder Hannah Capone (Fitchburg, Mass.) snapped a 1-1 tie in the 69th minute to lift the visiting Bears to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday evening in a NCAA Division III women's soccer match on a rain-soaked Cressy Field.

Bridgewater State (6-3) extended its winning streak to six matches, while the Corsairs suffered their first defeat at home to even their overall record at 3-3-1.

UMass Dartmouth opened the scoring in the 26th minute, when junior Nicole Starkey-Cox (Warwick, R.I.) created the opportunity with a quick touch to sophomore Abby Silva (Fall River, Mass.). Silva elevated her pass over the top of the Bears' backline, where junior Talia D'Ambruoso (Warwick, R.I.) drilled her third marker of the season into the back of the net.

Bridgewater State capitalized on a Corsair defensive breakdown to even the ledger. The hosts tried to clear their defensive zone by playing the ball back to the keeper, but her attempt was unable to bypass a Bear attacker. Senior forward Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) gathered the clearing attempt and popped her fifth goal of the campaign into the empty net.

The visitors came storming out of the gates to open the second stanza, registering the opening seven shots of the frame. Bridgewater State's persistence was rewarded when freshman midfielder Yasmina Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) slipped a pass to the right flank. Capone collected the pass in stride and beat the keeper over her left shoulder for the game-winner.

Sophomore Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) made three saves to earn the win, while her counterpart, sophomore Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) posted a game-high five stops for the Corsairs.

Bridgewater State held a 16-10 advantage in shots, and a slim 2-1 lead in corner kicks.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, when the Corsairs travel to UMass Boston. The match will be played at Boston College High School, adjacent to the Beacon campus. Bridgewater State heads to MASCAC rival Framingham State University on Saturday for an 11:00 AM Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match with the Rams.
