Women's Soccer Blanks MCLA, 2-0, in MASCAC Opener

BRIDGWATER, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Drew Guay (Fall River, Mass.) and freshman forward Taylor Loyd (Halifax, Mass.) each scored to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting MCLA in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears even their record at 3-3 (1-0 MASCAC) with their third straight shutout win, while the Trailblazers fall to 1-5 (0-1 MASCAC).

Sophomore goaltender Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) turned aside three shots as she recorded her third consecutive shutout. DeSousa has not allowed a goal in 275 minutes.

After a scoreless first half, Guay got the Bears on the board with her first goal of the season in the 65th minute off a restart. Senior defender Olivia Planty (Litchfield, N.H.) sent a kick into the box and Guay redirected the ball past the MCLA keeper.

Loyd extended the Bears' advantage to 2-0 in the 83rd minute as she buried a shot into the top right corner off a cross from senior defender Carolyn Sessler (Plymouth, Mass.). It marked the first collegiate goal for the BSU rookie.

Junior forward Natalie Caney (Belchertown, Mass.) had nearly given the Trailblazers the early lead as she ripped a shot off the crossbar in the 33rd minute. The scoring chances were few, however, for the visitors who were outshot by a decided margin of 27-4.

Along with their decided shot advantage, the Bears also held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior netminder Kathryn Daly (South Cairo, N.Y.) made eight saves between the pipes for the Trailblazers.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome the Seahawks of Salve Regina University for a seven o'clock game. The Trailblazers travel to SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday evening to take on the Wildcats at six.
