Pepin, Hatfield Lead Women's Soccer to 3-1 MASCAC Win at Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Freshman forward Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and junior forward Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) added a goal and an assist to lead Bridgewater State to a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASAC) women's soccer action this morning at Elliot Field.

In the first frame, Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 13:10 mark as senior forward Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net after being awarded a penalty kick for the 1-0 margin.

The Bears knotted the score in the 22nd minute of action when Pepin collected a feed from sophomore midfielder Allyson Pontes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and deposited the ball into the back of the net to make the score 1-1 going into the break.

Following intermission, Bridgewater State took the lead (2-1) at the 54:13 mark as Pepin blasted a shot inside the near post of an assist from Hatfield for her second tally of the contest.

Bridgewater State secured the their fourth victory of the season in the 79th minute of play when Hatfield fired a shot from the right side into the upper right corner for her team-leading eighth score on the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.

For the contest, Fitchburg State held a slim 15-14 advantage in shots, while the Bears had a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. In goal, senior Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H) finished with six saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while junior Kristin Reardon (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped seven shots in 90 minutes of work for the Bears.

Fitchburg State (2-10-1-0, 0-3-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it hosts the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College at 7 p.m. Bridgewater State (3-8-0, 1-3-0 MASCAC) will host conference foe Mass. Maritime Academy next Saturday at 12 p.m.
