Women's Soccer Edged by Babson, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Narlee's (Medfield, Mass.) goal with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation lifted visiting Babson College to a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater State University in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

The Beavers improve to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Bears, playing in their season-opener, slip to 0-1.

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the 80th minute, Narlee one-timed a perfectly executed corner kick that was served into the box by sophomore defender Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.).

Babson had taken a 1-0 lead a little more than three minutes into the contest as freshman midfielder Kelsey Ford (Rockville Center, N.Y.) lofted a shot from the top of the 18 that eluded the outstretched hand of BSU junior netminder Emma Titus (Salem, Mass.).  Senior forward Jessica DePhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) assisted on Ford's first collegiate marker.  The Beavers also had a first half goal called back on an offsides.

The Bears, who were outshot 20-8 on the evening, netted the equalizer in the 59th minute as freshman forward Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) headed in a Drew Guay (Fall River, Mass.) cross. Guay had beat the Babson keeper to a loose ball  near the end line off a rebound of an Emily Lane (Parsonsfield, Maine) shot. With the goalie out of position, Guar served a cross right in front of the empty net which was headed in by Pepin. The scoring strike marked the first collegiate goal for the BSU rookie.

After Narlee had put the Beavers back on top, the Bears had a quality chance to even the score in the 85th minute.  A Pepin redirect off a long cross was turned back by Babson senior goaltender Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass.) who made a diving stop to her right.  The Beavers would control play over the final five minutes and did not allow another shot.

Kapotsis finished with four saves to record her first win of the season for the visitors.  Titus, making her first collegiate start, turned aside five shots.  BSU defenders also made a pair of team saves.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Wheaton College on Saturday to take on the Lyons at noon. Babson hosts the Soccer Without Borders Classic on Saturday and Sunday.  The Beavers take on Bard College on Saturday and Simmons College on Sunday with both games getting underway at 1:30.
