Women's Soccer Falls to Roger Williams, 4-1

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team picked up its first win in it past four tries, defeating Bridgewater State University 4-1 Thursday evening in non-conference action.

Early on in the first half, both teams had chances to take a quick lead. Two minutes into the contest, Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) served up a cross from the right side to Katie Johnson (Marshfield, Mass.), but Johnson was tripped up as the ball came in before she could corral the ball.

A minute later, Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) put a short through pass to a sprinting Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.). However, Bears keeper Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) was able to boot the ball out before Noel was able to get to the ball.

In the sixth minute, Julie Loewenstein (Malta, N.Y.) served up a long pass to Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.) who had a good look, but put her attempt wide right.

The Hawks finally came through in the 17th minute, when Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) scored on a loose ball in the box off a corner kick by Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Casey's ball slipped out of the hands of Yowell, allowing Tetreault to take advantage and put the Hawks up.

The Hawks nearly added another score in the 19th minute, with Noel having a one-on-one opportunity, but had her shot denied by a great sliding save by Yowell.

In the 34th minute, Noel came through with another goal for the Hawks, taking a short pass from Tetreault on the right side and just putting it in to the left corner.

Just before the end of the half, the Hawks added two more goals by Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Chandler Capozzi (Lynn, Mass.). Kaiser brought the ball down the left side and knocked in a shot just inside the left corner and just under a diving Yowell with five minutes remaining in the half. In the final minute, Capozzi fired a high shot from the middle over the keeper for her first career goal.

The second half saw only one score, but it came off the foot of Hatfield to break the shutout. Hatfield fired a deep free kick from about 30 feet outside the box and placed it perfectly to the back of the net. She has recorded at least one point in three straight games and four out of the last five.

Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) picked up the win, needing only one save on the night, while Yowell had four saves in the loss.

Roger Williams (7-2-1) steps back into Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Salve Regina, while Bridgewater State (3-3-1) goes to Westfield State for a MASCAC contest, both games on Saturday.
