Women's Soccer Plays Framingham to 2-2 Double Overtime Tie

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and Framingham State University played to a 2-2, double overtime tie in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field in Bridgewater. The game marked the MASCAC opener for both teams.

The host Bears see their record go to 2-2-1 (0-0-1 MASCAC) on the season with the tie, while the Rams are now 4-1-1 (0-0-1 MASCAC).

Framingham jumped out to a 1-0 lead just a minute and nine seconds into the contest on an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Kayla Austin (Winchester, Mass.). For Austin the goal marked her fifth of the season.

Bridgewater tied the game just over five minutes later as junior forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) notched her first of two goals on the afternoon.  Senior midfielder Katie Nasuti (Millbury, Mass.) picked up the assist on the marker as she sent Jonasson in on a breakaway with a long feed down the right side. Jonasson dribbled towards the middle and beat the Framingham keeper with a shot to the left corner of the net.

Framingham reclaimed the lead in the 16th minute as senior midfielder Cara Murtagh (Quincy, Mass.) scored off the rebound off an Austin shot which was mishandled by the BSU netminder.

The Bears evened the score at two apiece with under three minutes to play in the opening stanza as Jonasson tallied her second goal of the game and team-leading fifth of the season.  Senior forward Caley McClendon (Keene, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) picked up the assists.  Stationed inside the 18, McClendon passed the ball over to Hatfield in the box who promptly slipped a pass to an unguarded Jonasson who buried the shot into the back of the net.

Both teams were forced to make defensive saves in a scoreless second half. Hatfield cleared the ball off the line for the Bears in the 58th minute off a corner kick, while senior defender Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.) stopped a shot by Jonasson in the 77th minute with the Framingham keeper out of position on a rebound opportunity.

The teams had one shot on goal apiece in the first overtime period, while neither team had a shot on frame in the second extra session.

Framingham held a 21-13 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

BSU sophomore goaltender Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) made four saves between the pipes for the Bears, while Framingham sophomore Sara Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) turned aside four shots for the visitors.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with non-league games.  Bridgewater entertains Salve Regina University at seven o'clock, while Framingham hosts Rhode Island College at four.
