Women's Soccer Downs RIC, 4-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over visiting Rhode Island College on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The host Bears even their 2013 record at 2-2 with the win, while the Anchorwomen slip to 2-2-1.

Senior midfielder Katie Nasuti (Millbury, Mass.) opened the scoring less than four minutes into the contest as she stole the ball from an RIC defender and beat the keeper one-on-one from ten yards out with a shot to the right side of the net.

The Bears had countless opportunities over the final 41 minutes of the opening stanza, including three breakaways chances, but were unable to dent the scoreboard again as the teams headed to the intermission with Bridgewater leading 1-0. BSU held a 17-2 shot advantage for the half and dominated possession and territory.

Jonasson made it a 2-0 game in the 60th minute as she converted a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.  Jonasson notched her second goal of the game and third of the season less than three minutes later as she beat a defender down the right side and chipped a shot over the RIC keeper and into the back-left corner of the net.

RIC got on the board with a penalty kick strike by sophomore forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, R.I.) in the 72nd minute.

The hosts regained the three-goal advantage as freshman midfielder Emily Herrick (Pepperell, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal in the 81st minute. Herrick got behind the RIC keeper who came out to play the ball and easily deposited a shot into the unguarded net.

The Bears would hold a decided 30-6 edge in shots for the game.

Sophomore netminder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) picked up her second career win between the pipes for the Bears as she played into the 76th minute and recorded one save.  Classmate Emma Titus (Salem, Mass.), who was making her collegiate debut, did not face a shot in relief of Yowell.

Junior goaltender Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.) turned aside nine shots for the Anchorwomen.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday at noon.  Bridgewater entertains MASCAC rival Framingham State University, while RIC travels to Little East foe UMass Dartmouth.
