Women's Soccer Downs Plymouth State, 2-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forwards Emily Lane (Parsonsfield, Maine) and Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) notched second half goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer  team to a 2-1 victory over non-league foe Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The host Bears improve to 1-2 on the season with the win, while the Panthers slip to 1-2.

In search of their first goal of the season, the Bears outshot the Panthers 14-1 in the opening stanza but were unable to dent the scoreboard.  Just 53 second into the second half, however, Jonasson scored off a cross from sophomore forward Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

That lead was shortlived however as Plymouth scored on an own goal less than six minutes later when a Bridgewater defender headed in a corner kick.

Lane would tally the game winner in the 60th minute after Jonasson sent her in on a breakaway. Lane dribble around the PSU goaltender and delivered a shot into the unguarded net.

The Bears finished with a 25-4 shot advantage for the game and a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.  The hosts also rang the iron four times.  There were 13 offside calls in the game, seven against Bridgewater and six against Plymouth.

BSU sophomore netminder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) finished with two saves to record her first collegiate victory.  Freshman keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) turned aside six shots between the pipes for the Panthers.

In upcoming action, the Bears host Rhode Island College on Wednesday night at seven.  The Panthers travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday afternoon for a four o'clock game with the Chargers.
