Men's Track & Field Places Third at Tufts Sunshine Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Jason Dann (Reading, Mass.) broke his own school record in the hammer throw and won two events to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team on Saturday at the Tufts University Sunshine Classic.

The Bears finished third in the team standings at the meet with 141.5 points. Host Tufts finished first with 233.5 points followed by RPI (182.5 pts.) in secomd place.

Dann outdistanced the field in the hammer with a toss of 174 feet (53.04m) as he eclipsed his previous mark of 172 feet, seven inches (52.60m) set earlier this season at the Kennesaw State Invitational.

Dann also earned the meet title in the discus throw with a PR of 149 feet, 11 inches (45.70m), and finished eight in the shot put with an outdoor PR of 42 feet, nine inches (13.03m).

Corey Stalters (Norton, Mass.) won both the javelin and the shot put. Stalters tossed the javelin 192 feet, five inches (58.66m) and threw the shot 49 feet, 11.25 inches (15.22m). He also placed fourth in the discus (138'4"/42.17m).

Jonathan Quigley (Haverhill, Mass.), Leo Lopez (Haverhill, Mass.) and Nathaniel Packer (Tisbury, Mass.) also placed in the hammer for the Bears while Packer and Quigley scored in the shot put.

Quigley placed second in the hammer with a PR of 164 feet, ten inches (50.24m), and finished fifth in the shot (44'3.5"/13.50m). Lopez placed fourth in the hammer as he connected for a PR of 154 feet, nine inches (47.17m). Packer checked in at fourth in the shot with an outdoor PR of 44 feet, 10.25 inches (13.67m), and was eighth in the hammer (141'4"/43.09m).

Thomas Barinelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) placed second in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 10.5 inches (6.97m) while Exondus Barnes (East Providence, R.I.) was fourth in the long jump with a PR of 21 feet, 10.75 inches (6.67m).

Barnes and Barinelli also finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the high jump with identical marks of five feet, 9.75 inches (1.77m).

Nicholas Grace (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded a distance of 38 feet, 1.5 inches (11.62m) to place eighth in the triple jump.

In the track events, Chigozie Adigwe (Lowell, Mass.) placed second in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.00 seconds. Barnilli notched a finals time of 15.67 seconds (15.40 prelims) in the 110 hurdles to finished sixth.

Michael Neitlich (Middleboro, Mass.) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.01 seconds while Nathan Branco (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded a PR of 59.62 seconds to finish sixth in the event.

Jordan Rivera-Silva (Attleboro, Mass.) placed third in the 200-meter dash with a PR of 22.33 seconds, and finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.29). Jacob DeAndrade (Taunton, Mass.) and Michael Young (Shrewbury, Mass.) checked in at seventh (22.49) and eighth (22.62), respectively, in the 200.

DeAndrade also placed fifth in the finals of the 100-meter dash with a finals time of 11.15 seconds.

Javon Epps (Brockton, Mass.) finished sixth in the 100 finals crossing the line in 11.31 seconds. Epps recorded a PR of 11.10 seconds in the preliminaries. Stephen Spofford (Chelmsford, Mass.) was seventh after the 100 prelims as he posted a time of 11.15 seconds. Spofford did not compete in the finals.

Aydan Fournier (Assonet, Mass.) was the fourth harrier to cross the finish line in the 1,500-meter run as he recorded a PR of 4:04.94.

The Bears' had a pair of 4x400-meter relay squads compete on Saturday. Neitlich, Spofford, Fournier and Grace place second with a time of 3:36.89, while the foursome of Ryker King (Wareham, Mass.), Jack Owen (Weymouth, Mass.), Branco and Mitchell Parent (Cumberland, Maine) finished fifth with a time of 3:54.43.

Kevin McBirney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) competed in the 800-meter run on Saturday at the Sean Collier Invitational hosted by MIT. McBirney finished 11th (fifth among DIII runners) with a PR time of 1:52.83.

The BSU outdoor track & field teams travel to Westfield State University next Friday for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships.
