BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior Brian Espinosa has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Espinosa eclipsed his own school mark in the 200-meter dash as he posted a finals time of 21.38 seconds at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championships held this past weekend at Westfield State University.  The Rehoboth, Massachusetts native garnered All-NEICAAA honors as he placed third in the event. His previous standard of 21.62 seconds was set earlier this season at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships.

Espinosa also ran a leg on the Bears' record-setting 4x100-meter relay team which posted a time of 41.64 seconds and earned All-NEICAAA status with a third-place showing.  Joining Espinosa in the relay were teammates Chinedu Chukwu (Randolph, Mass.), Joseph Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Andrew Couture (Dighton, Mass.). The foursome also set the previous BSU mark of 41.91 seconds earlier this season at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships.

Espinosa picked up his third All-NEICAAA honor as he placed second in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 5.25 inches (6.84 meters).

In just two years at Bridgewater State, Espinosa has earned MASCAC Track or Field Athlete of the Week accolades an impressive 13 times (seven outdoor, six indoor).

Espinosa currently ranks ninth in all of Division III in the 200 and 11th in the long jump.  The Bears' 4x100 relay is presently ranked 24th nationally.

This past winter, Espinosa earned All-American honors in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.  He placed eight in the 200 with a finals time of 21.85 seconds.  In the preliminaries, Espinosa broke his own indoor program mark with a time of 21.77 seconds.

Next weekend, qualifying members of the BSU outdoor track and field teams will compete at the ECAC Division III Championships hosted by RPI.
