Brian Espinosa Named MASCAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University junior Brian Espinosa has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Espinosa garnered a pair of individual titles to lead the Bears to the New England Alliance Championship over the weekend .  The Rehoboth, Massachusetts native placed first in the 100-meter dash with a finals time of 10.88 second, and captured top honors in the 200-meter dash with a school-record time of 21.62 seconds.  He also ran a leg on Bridgewater's 4x100-meter relay (41.91) which placed second.

Earlier this season, Espinosa was selected as the MASCAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for his performance in the long jump at the Tufts Snowflake Classic.  He has earned MASCAC Track or Field Athlete of the Week honors 12 times (six outdoor, six indoor) since coming to Bridgewater State in 2012.

Espinosa currently ranks 13th in all of Division III in the 200 and 20th in the long jump.  The Bears' 4x100 relay, featuring Espinosa and teammates Chinedu Chukwu (Randolph, Mass.), Joseph Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Andrew Couture (Dighton, Mass.), is presently ranked 22nd nationally.

This past winter, Espinosa earned All-American honors in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.  He placed eight in the 200 with a finals time of 21.85 seconds.  In the preliminaries, Espinosa broke his own indoor program mark with a time of 21.77 seconds.

Regional postseason play gets underway next weekend when qualifying member of the BSU men's track & field team compete at the Division III New England Championships hosted by Springfield College.  Espinosa has qualified for DIII New Englands in the 100, 200 and long jump.
