Brian Espinosa Named MASCAC Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior Brian Espinosa has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.

A native of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, Espinosa placed second in the long jump at the Tufts Snowflake Classic with a leap of 23 feet, 0.5 inches (7.02 meters).  He qualified for all three regional postseason championship meets (DIII New England, ECAC, NEICAAA) in the event.

Espinosa also recorded a preliminary time of 10.84 seconds in the 100-meter dash to qualify for all three regional postseason championships in that event as well. He currently ranks second in all of Division III in the long jump and ninth in the 100.

Earlier this month, Espinosa earned All-American honors in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.  He placed eight in the 200 with a finals time of 21.85 seconds.  In the preliminaries, Espinosa broke his own indoor program mark with a time of 21.77 seconds.

The reigning MASCAC outdoor champion in both the 100 and the 200, Espinosa has earned MASCAC Track or Field Athlete of the Week honors 11 times (five outdoor, six indoor) since coming to Bridgewater State in 2012.

Espinosa presently holds BSU individual indoor marks in the long jump (23’0”), the 200 (21.85) and the 55-meter dash (6.53).  He also ran a leg on the Bears’ record-setting 4x200-meter relay (1:29.45).

The outdoor track and field season continues for Espinosa and his teammates on Saturday as the Bears compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic.
