Espinosa Captures Long Jump Title at DIII New Englands

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Junior Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, Mass.) captured the individual title in the long jump to lead the Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team during day one of the 2014 Division III New England Championships hosted by Springfield College.

Espinosa recorded a distance of 23 feet, 6.75 inches (7.18 meters) on his final jump of the day to edge Wesley DeChristofaro of WPI by 1.25 inches.

Classmate Ian Knapton (Mattapoisett, Mass.) also garnered All-New England honors for the Bears in the long jump.  Knapton posted a mark of 22 feet, 1.5 inches (6.74 meters) to finish in seventh place. The top eight place-winners in each individual event garner All-New England status.

Sophomore Declan Wirzburger (Hanson, Mass.) finished ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 152 feet, seven inches (46.52 meters).

After day one of the championship meet, the Bears are in fourth place in the team standings with 12 points.  MIT leads the pack with 50 points followed by Bates College (20 pts.) and Coast Guard (20 pts.).
