Men's Track & Field Places Third at DIII New Englands

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track & field team recorded nine All-New England performances and set a pair of school records to highlight day two of the 2014 Division III New England Championships held at Springfield College.

The Bears finished third in the team standings with 67 points.  MIT won the team title with 159.83 points followed by Bates College in second (79.33 pts.).

Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) captured the New England title in the triple jump with a leap of 48 feet, two inches (14.68 meters) as he eclipsed his own previous BSU outdoor mark of 48 feet (14.63 meters) set earlier this season at the New England Alliance Championships.  Danner-Hicks is currently ranked sixth in all of Division III in the triple jump.

Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, Mass.) won the New England individual championship in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.75 seconds.

Espinosa also ran a leg on the Bears' New England champion 4x100-meter relay squad along with Chinedu Chukwu (Randolph, Mass.), Joseph Danner Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Andrew Couture (Dighton, Mass.).  The foursome posted a time of 42.03 seconds.

Joseph Danner-Hicks and Chukwu also earned All-New England honors in the 100-meter dash.  Danner-Hicks placed third (10.87) in the event while Chukwu finished fifth (11.05).

Stephan Cawley (Dedham, Mass.) garnered All-New England accolades in both the discus and the shot put.  Cawley posted a third-place mark of 155 feet, four inches (47.34 meters) in the discus to break his own school record of 150 feet, 5.12 inches set last season.  He also finished eighth in the shot (46'11.75"/14.32m).

Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.96), while Christian Lavoie (Marion, Mass.) finished sixth in the shot put (47'5"/14.45m) to round out the Bears' All-New England performers.

Next weekend, qualifying members of the men's outdoor track and field team will compete at the NEICAAA Championships hosted by Westfield State University.

Notes: On Friday, Espinosa and Ian Knapton (Mattapoisett, Mass.) earned All-New England honors in the long jump with Espinosa capturing the individual title...Espinosa is ranked ninth in Division III in the long jump and 19th in the 200...Murtagh is 18th nationally in the hurdles.
