Men's Track & Field Captures Team Title at UMD Corsair Classic

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's outdoor track and field team captured the meet title at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic on Saturday.

The Bears posted a team score of 121 points to outdistance host UMass Dartmouth (105 pts.), who finished second, and Colby College (89 pts.), who placed third.

Brian Espinosa paced the Bears as he placed first in both the long jump (22'1.5"/6.74m) and the 100-meter dash (11.02).   He also ran a leg on BSU's winning 4x100-meter relay squad (43.24) along with Chinedu Chukwu, Joseph Danner-Hicks and Andrew Couture

Couture finished second (11.04) in the 100, while Danner-Hicks placed fifth (11.18) and Chukwu finished seventh (11.24). 

Connor Foley captured top honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:17.04), while Conor Murtagh grabbed second place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.08).

Timothy Judge placed fourth in both the 200-meter dash (22.83) and 400-meter dash (50.88).

Kevin Sawyer finished third in the 400-meter hurdles, Daniel Coulter placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.80) and Dallas O'Brien wa the eighth runner cross the finish line in the 1,500-meter run (4:09.52) to round out the Bears' top track placewinners.

Along with Espinosa's outstanding leap in the long jump, Christian Lavoie highlighted BSU's throwing events with a second place performance in the shot put (47'1"/14.35m) and a third place showing in the discus (134'2"/40.90).

Stephan Cawley finished third in the shot (46'6.75"/14.19m) and seventh in the discus (131'2"/39.98m), while Ian Knapton placed third in the long jump (20'10"/6.35m).

Declan Wirzburger added a fourth place throw in the discus (40.58m) and grabbed seventh place in the hammer throw (132'6"/40.40m).

Next Friday, the Bears compete at the Eastern Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University.

Notes: Three BSU men's outdoor track and field athletes currently rank among the top twenty in all of Division III. Espinosa is third in the long jump and ninth in the 100, while Murtagh is 17th in the 110-meter hurdles.  Joshua Danner-Hicks, who did not compete in the triple jump today, presently holds the second longest distance in the event.
