Men's Tennis Posts 7-2 Little East Win Over RIC

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team entertains Little East Conference (LEC) rival Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 from the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Little East while the Anchormen fall to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Bridgewater is 13-11 versus RIC since 2000 and 7-4 at home.

The Bears captured two of three doubles matches and five of the six singles flights.

Bridgewater led 2-1 after doubles play as Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) and Tom Ayson (Plymouth, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 at the top flight while Filppo Mucci (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) posted an 8-4 decision at number three.

Noah Morin (Smithfield, R.I.) and Elijah Gouin (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up the lone doubles point for the Anchormen with an 8-1 victory at the second flight.

In singles play, Beatrice cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 straight set decision at the second flight and Robby Cooney (Plymouth, Mass.) battled back from a set down to record a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory at number one to extend the BSU lead to 4-1. Hebert then secured the decisive fifth point for the Bears as he also rebounded from a set down to post a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph at the sixth flight.

Matthew Krampf (Littleton, Mass.) and Mucci rounded out the scoring for Bridgewater in singles play. Krampf earned a 7-5, 6-4 straight set victory at the fourth spot and Mucci won 6-3, 7-6 at number five winning the second set in an 11-9 tiebreaker.

Gouin edged Ayson at third singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, to account for the final score of 7-2.

The Little East schedule continues later this week for both teams. The Bears travel to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock match with the Wolves. The Anchormen host the Beacons of UMass Boston on Thursday afternoon at 3:30.
