Men's Tennis Downs Southern Maine in Little East Match, 8-1

GORHAM, Maine – The visiting Bridgewater State University men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Gorham High School courts.

The Bears improve to 2-4 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in the Little East play, while the Huskies fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flight.

Seniors Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, Mass.) and Charles Fiske (Taunton, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-5 win at first double, while the second flight tandem of graduate student Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and freshman Adam Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) recorded an 8-0 victory. Sophomore Charles Malinowski (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' doubles winners with a tough 8-7 (7-5) decision at number three.

Ziegler (6-1, 6-0), Nutter (6-0, 6-2), Beatrice (6-2, 6-1), Fiske (6-3, 6-0) and freshman Tyler Barros (Somerset, Mass.) all won in straight sets in singles competition at the first through fifth flights, respectively. Barros posted a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at number five. Ziegler's win marked his first singles victory of the season.

The Little East schedule continues on Monday when the Bears entertain Castleton University at 3:30.
