Men's Tennis Posts 9-0 Little East Win Over Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over visiting University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 7-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Little East, while the Huskies fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Bridgewater is 9-8 versus Southern Maine since the Bears joined the Little East in 2005 and 7-2 at home.

Bridgewater swept the three doubles matches and captured each of the six singles flights.

In doubles play, seniors Jeff Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) and Sean Nutter (Mattapoisett, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at number one, while Kendan Ziegler (Hadley, N.Y.) and Darius Desnoes (Ithaca, N.Y.) posted an 8-3 triumph at the second flight. Junior Charles Fiske (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Salzberg (Uxbridge, Mass.) notched an 8-6 decision at number three.

Pavao (6-0, 6-0), Ziegler (6-2, 6-1), Nutter (6-1, 6-1), Fiske (6-4, 6-0) and Desnoes (6-2, 7-5) also recorded straight set singles wins for the Bears at the first, second, third, fourth and sixth flights, respectively. Junior Robert Dwyer (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) rounded out Bridgewater's singles winners with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number five.

Fisk recorded his first collegiate singles win, while Salzberg notched his first collegiate doubles victory. Ziegler's win in singles play marked his team-leading seventh of the season.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears entertain Rhode Island College at 3:30, while the Huskies host Salem State University at three o'clock.
