Men's Tennis Falls to Salem State in Season-Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Salem State University men's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Court.

The match marked the season-opener for the host Bears (0-1).

The Vikings (1-0) captured two of the three doubles flights and four of the six singles matches to earn the win.

Grad student Peter Coletti (Beverly, Mass.) and senior Roni Brazile Brockton, Mass.) paired up for an 8-1 triumph at first doubles for Salem State, while senior Andrew Muttiah (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and sophomore Cory Cherico (Winthrop, Mass.) posted an 8-0 win at the second flight.

The BSU sophomore tandem of Charles Fiske (Taunton, Mass.) and Cameron Doherty (Milford, Mass.) recorded the Bears' lone doubles point with an 8-4 victory at number three.

All six singles matches were decided in straight sets.

Cameron cruised to 6-0, 6-0 decision at the second flight, and Cherico added a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four for the Vikings, while Muttiah secured the decisive fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the top flight. Brazile checked in with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number three.

Doherty breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win for the Bears at number six singles, and Fiske rounded out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the fifth flight.

Up next: The Bears entertain Regis College next Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, while the Vikings host Bridgewater State next Saturday at noon.
