Men's Tennis Falls to Wentworth, 7-2

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to visiting Wentworth on Wednesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The visiting Leopards improve to 2-5 with the win, while the host Bears slip to 0-3.

Senior Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) led the Bears with a pair of wins competing at both the top singles and doubles flights.

Sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) and senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) got Wentworth on the board with an 8-1 win at number three doubles. Bleau and junior Michael Deslisle (Berkley, Mass.) evened the match with an 8-5 win at the first flight. The Leopards took a 2-1 lead after doubles play when junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) teamed for an 8-5 decision at the second spot.

Peter cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles to extend the Leopards' lead before Bleau posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number one to make it a 3-2 match. Melnik won in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, at number three while Tocco's 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory at number two clinched the match for Wentworth.

Sophomores Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Leopards with straight sets wins at number five (6-1, 6-1) and number six (6-1, 6-3).

The Bears open up Little East Conference play on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Western Connecticut State University for a 3:30 match with the Colonials. The Leopards head to Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Endicott College on Saturday afternoon. The match will take place at the Bass River Tennis Club starting at 2:30.
