Men's Tennis Falls to Southern Maine, 6-3, in Little East Match

GORHAM, Maine  – The University of Southern Maine men's tennis team posted a 6-3 win over Bridgewater State University in a Little East Conference match on Tuesday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.

The Huskies earned their fifth consecutive win to improve to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Little East.  Bridgewater State falls to 9-3 overall and suffers its first loss in conference play to stand at 3-1.  The match was moved indoors after the doubles points had played out due to inclement weather.

Sophomore Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine) and junior Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) earned an 8-2 win at second doubles, while junior Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine) and senior Jonathan Sproul (Bristol, Maine) took an 8-5 win at third doubles.

The Bears' doubles team of junior Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) garnered an 8-5 victory at the top flight.

Leading 2-1 heading into singles play, USM won four out of the six singles points.  Junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H.) registered a 6-3, 6-2 win to lead the Huskies from the top of the order. Playing second singles, St. John also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

USM also earned points at third and fourth singles.  Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles, while Ross posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision at fourth singles.

BSU received singles triumphs from sophomore Bleau and junior Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.  Both came back from a set down as Bleau won 3-6, 7-5, 10-3, while Johnson won 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Southern Maine travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match.  Bridgewater State hosts LEC rival UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday, April 24th (3:00 p.m.).
