BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team downed visiting Johnson & Wales University, 9-0, on Monday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.
The match marked the home-opener for the Bears who improve to 2-0 on the young season. Johnson & Wales falls to 0-1 as the Wildcats were playing in their season-opener.
Bridgewater captured all three doubles matches and each of the six singles flights led by sophomore Wesley Esthimer (Franklin, Mass.) who posted a 6-0, 6-1 straight triumph at first singles and teamed with junior Jesse Gotlib (Dartmouth, Mass.) for an 8-4 win at second doubles.
Junior Eric Johnson (Kingston, Mass.) and freshman Hung Huynh (Worcester, Mass.) pair up for a 9-8 victory at second doubles as the match was decided by a 7-4 tie-breaker. Junior Cody Farrell (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) breezed to an 8-1 triumph at the third doubles flight.
Gotlib, Bleau and Farrell each came back from a set down to win at the second, third and fourth singles flights, respectively. Freshman Alex McGannon (Fairhaven, Mass.) registered a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number five singles, while Johnson also won in straight sets at the sixth flight, 6-2, 6-0.
In upcoming action, the Bears entertain the Lynx of Lesley University on Friday afternoon at 3:30, while the Wildcats travel to Curry College on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 match with the Colonels.
