BRIDGEWATER, MASS. -- The Bridgewater State College men's tennis team knocked off visiting UMass Boston, 5-1, in Little East Conference Tournament quarterfinal action this afternoon at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.

The Bears won all three doubles flights and then picked up wins at number one and number five singles to take the match.  Once BSC tallied the necessary five points to win, the match was halted with three singles flights still in progress.

Bridgewater (11-6) will advance to the tournament semifinal round which will take place on Friday at Salem State College.  The third-seeded Bears will take on second-seeded UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 PM.  UMass knocked off Rhode Island College, 5-0, in their quarterfinal round match.  UMass Boston completes the 2009 season with a record of 3-10.

Senior Matt Charest (Somerset, MA) and freshman Duncan Yarworth (Wrentham, MA) teamed up for an 8-5 win at first doubles.  BSC also got doubles victories from sophomores David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, MA) and Justin Lipomi (Lowell, MA) at number two, and senior Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, MA) and sophomore Nick Amrose (Arlington, MA) at the third flight.

Needing just two wins in singles play, the Bears got the points they would need from Charest and Campbell.  In the top flight battle, Charest defeated UMass senior Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, MA) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.  Campbell also won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, as he captured the fifth singles match.

The lone victory for UMass came at fourth singles.  Sophomore Reinaldo Lopes (Brussels, Belgium) knocked off BSC freshman Mike Zagame (Uxbridge, MA) in straights sets, 6-1, 6-2.
