BOSTON, Mass. -- Freshman Reinaldo Lopes was down match-point, only to fight it off and come back to win the third set and give the University of Massachusetts Boston men's tennis team a 5-4 victory over visiting Bridgewater State College today in a Little East Conference match that was played at the Boston College High School courts.
The Beacons improve to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Bears fall to 2-4 and 0-2 in the Little East.
Lopes was down 5-4 in the third set to Bridgewater's Justin Lipomi, before taking the set, 7-5, to earn a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory at sixth singles to break a 4-4 tie and give UMB the deciding point for the dual-match triumph.
Junior Jovan Jordan-Whitter, who is ranked 25th in the Northeast Region by the ITA, won his eighth straight singles match to improve to 9-1 for the Beacons with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at first singles over Matt Charest.
Senior Barry Gorman remained undefeated in singles play on the season for the Bears as knocked off UMB's Paul Braude in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at the second flight. Gorman also teamed with junior Brendon Barbo for an 8-6 victory at second flight doubles.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Wednesday, April 9 when it hosts Lyndon State College in a match that will be played on the campus of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA at 3:00 p.m. The Bears will travel to Salem, MA on April 12 to take on Salem State College at 1:00 p.m.
