BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Roger Williams tennis team defeated Bridgewater State 6-3 in the Bears home opener this afternoon at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater in non-conference men’s tennis action.

The Hawks (5-5) took four out of six singles matches and two out of the three doubles to come away with the win. The Bears fall to 1-2 on the young season with the loss.

Junior Matt Charest (Somerset, MA) and senior Barry Gorman (Hopedale, MA) won their respective singles matches while Charest and classmate Giovanni Cuscina (Mansfield, MA) teamed up to take BSC’s lone doubles match win 8-6.

Charest and Gorman opened the match with a 2-0 lead for BSC, but Roger Williams won the next four singles flights to take a 4-2 margin into the doubles flights. Senior’s Dan Roberts (Milford, CT) and Ryan Fayed (Glastonbury, CT), sophomore Kyle Baker (Bolton, CT) and freshman Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, CT) each posted wins in their respective singles matches for Roger Williams.

For Roger Williams in the second doubles heat, Kleitz and Bashier teamed up to defeat Gorman and Barbaro, 8-6, and then Fangel and Jeff Agonia (Lincoln, RI) defeated freshman classmates Nick Ambrose (Arlington, MA) and Justin Lipomi (Lowell, MA) 8-4 in the third flight.

Bridgewater State is back in action when they will be entertained by UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday for BSC’s LEC opener at 3:30 P.M. The Hawks continue their CCC conference schedule as they will travel to Gordon this Saturday at a time that has yet to be determined.
