Smith Sets School Mark in 200 Breaststroke, Advances to Consolation Finals at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Bridgewater State University senior Richard Smith placed 16th and broke his own school record in the preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke during the fourth and final day of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships held on Saturday morning at the IU Natatorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

Smith, who advances to Saturday night's consolation finals, posted a time of 2:03.41 as he eclipsed his previous BSU mark of 2:05.04 set last season at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.

Thirty-one swimmers from across the nation competed in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday morning. The top eight moved on to the finals, while nine through 16 advanced to the consolation finals which will take place later this evening. Smith was seeded 31st in the event.

Smith finished 32nd out of a field of 48 swimmers in the 200 individual medley on Wednesday with a time of 1:52.96. On Thursday, he finished 18th out of 33 competitors in the 400 individual medley with a school-record time of 3:59.45.
