Smith Sets School Mark in 400 IM at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Bridgewater State University senior Richard Smith (Milford, Mass.) broke his own school record and finished 18th in the preliminaries of the 400 individual medley during day two of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships held on Thursday morning at the IU Natatorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

Smith posted a time of 3:59.45 as he eclipsed his previous mark of 4:04.21 set last season at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.

Thirty-three swimmers from across the nation competed in the 400 IM on Thursday morning. The top 16 advanced to the finals and consolation finals which will take place later this evening.

On Wednesday, Smith finished 32nd out of a field of 48 swimmers in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.96

The national championship meet continues for Smith on Saturday as he will compete in the 200 breaststroke.
