Men's Soccer Plays to 2-2 Double Overtime Draw

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University and host Fitchburg State University played to a 2-2 double overtime tie in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer matchup on Saturday evening at Elliot Field.

The Bears  received an unassisted goal from junior forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) in the 37th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. For Gomes, the goal marked his team-leading fourth of the season.

The Bears doubled the lead just 59 seconds into the second half as freshman forward Kevin Roberts (Medway, Mass.) tucked his third goal of the season in the top right corner after junior midfielder Kane Moran (Perth, Australia) found him streaking down the left wing.

The Falcons' cut the lead in half with an own goal at 51:27 and tied the game ten minute later when senior Zach Young (Capo Beach, Calif.)  picked the pocket of the Bears' defender for his first goal of the season.

Bridgewater had the best chance of the overtimes when Gomes split the defense and ripped a hard low shot that freshman keeper Alex Al-Zaibak (Hingham, Mass.) turned aside with a nice diving stop.

The Bears held the advantage in both shots (23-10) and corners (5-1) for the game.

Al-Zaibak finished with five saves, while sophomore netminder Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) made four saves for the Bears.

The Falcons (4-3-1, 0-2-1 MASCAC) travel to Nichols College on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:00 PM non-conference game, while the Bears (2-6-1, 0-2-1 MASCAC) host Roger Williams at 7:00PM on Tuesday evening.
