Men's Soccer Falls to RIC, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) netted the game's only goal on a penalty kick to lift the visiting Rhode Island College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The Anchormen improve to 3-2 with the non-conference win, while the host Bears slip to 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, BSU sophomore forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) nearly put the Bears on the board in the 47th minute as his free kick from 29 yards out just barely sailed over the crossbar.

In the 55th minute of play, Gomes was stopped on a diving save by RIC senior netminder Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I.) on a 3-on-1 break. Thirty seconds later, the Bears were whistled for a foul in the box and Monteiro converted on the PK with a shot inside the right post.

RIC held a 14-7 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-1 edge in corner kick attempts. The Bears were whistled for 20 fouls in the game, compared to just nine for the Anchormen.

Moura finished with five saves to record his third win of the season and second shutout. BSU senior Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshman Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) split the game in between the pipes for the Bears as they finished with two saves apiece.

Both teams open up conference play on Saturday. The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival MCLA at 5:00 PM, while the Anchormen travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 2:30 Little East Conference matchup with the Huskies.
