Gomes Leads Men's Soccer to 4-1 Victory over Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Sophomore forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State University on Friday afternoon at Arold Field.

The Bears improve to 2-0 with the non-conference win, while the visiting Panthers fall to 1-1-1.

Gomes got the Bears on the board in the 21st minute off a long clearance from freshman defender Emelson Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde). Barbosa cleared the ball out of the defensive zone from around the 18. The ball bounced over the Plymouth State netminder and Gomes easily deposited a shot into the unguarded net.

Sophomore forward Brian Bortolotti (Foxborough, Mass.) staked the Bears to a 2-0 lead at the 25-minute mark. A punt from freshman goalkeeper Nate Morgado (Dartmouth, Mass.) found the feet of Gomes who slipped a pass to a streaking Bortolotti. Bortolotti beat the keeper with a shot to the left side of the net. The goal marked the first for Bortolotti in a BSU uniform.

Senior forward Prince Collins (Boston, Mass.) potted the Bears' third marker of the afternoon in the 41st minute. Following a pass from junior midfielder Cody Shannon (Norton, Mass.), Collins beat a defender and chipped the goalie from the right side.

Gomes' second goal of the game came in the 60th minute as he dribbled in from midfield, beat two defenders and ripped a shot that caromed off the left post and in.

Freshman forward Jerry Randolph (Malmo, Sweden) spoiled the Bears' shutout bid with an unassisted tally at the 68-minute mark.

Bridgewater held a 10-8 shot advantage as well as a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. The Bears were also flagged for five offsides.

Morgado made one save in his collegiate debut to record his first win. The lone save came on a penalty kick attempt in the 62nd minute.

Senior Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) also made one save between the pipes for the Panthers.

The Bears open up a four-game homestand next Wednesday night when they entertain the Anchormen of Rhode Island College at seven.
