Men's Soccer Opens 2016 Campaign with 2-0 Shutout of Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 2-0 shutout victory over host Salve Regina University on Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Sophomore midfielder Kane Moran (Attadale, Australia) and sophomore forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) scored for the visiting Bears (1-0), while senior goaltender Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded his 20th career shutout.

Moran headed home a perfectly placed cross to the back post by freshman defender Zachary Ells (Douglas, Mass.) in the 27th minute of play to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. The assist by Ells marked his first collegiate point.

Gomes staked the visitors to a 2-0 advantage in the 38th minute as he headed in a corner kick attempt that was sent into the box by senior midfielder Sawyer Fleck (Foxbor, Mass.).

Jepson was forced to make just one save as the BSU defense limited the Seahawks to only five shots and just the one on frame.

Sophomore netminder Michael Payan (Fort Lee, N.J.) turned aside three shots in the setback for Salve.

Bridgewater held an 11-5 shot advantage for the game as well as a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears are back in action on late Friday afternoon as they travel to Plymouth State University for a five o'clock game with the Panthers. The Seahawks (0-3) entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Nichols College on Saturday afternoon at three.
