Men's Soccer to Face MIT in NCAA Tournament First Round Action

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State  University Bears will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to take on the Engineers of MIT in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. The first round game will take place on Saturday, November 14th at 11:00 AM.

The Bears (17-3-1) will be making the program's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance after capturing the MASCAC Tournament Championship on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Framingham State University. Bridgewater also competed in the Division III championships in 1990, 2004, 2007 and 2013.

Recipients of an at-large bid, MIT is making the program's fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, The 17th ranked Engineers (16-2-1) secured a spot in the national tournament for the first time since 2013. Winners of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title, MIT fell to conference tournament winner Babson College, 2-1, in the championship match, which was held on Sunday evening.

The Bears are under the guidance of head coach Brendan Adams. In his 14 seasons as the BSU skipper, Adams' coaching record stands at 139-101-24 (.572) with an impressive MASCAC regular season mark of 62-23-13 (.699). During his tenure, the Bears have captured the MASCAC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament on four occasions (2004, 2007, 2013, 2015). The all-time winningest coach in program history, Adams garnered MASCAC Coach of the Year accolades for the fourth time in his career in 2015. He also earned the honor in 2003, 2009 and 2014.

The Bears are led by MASCAC Player of the Year, senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.), as well as fellow first team All-MASCAC selections senior midfielders Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) and Sawyer Fleck (Foxboro, Mass.), senior defender Nicholas Keddie (Abington, Mass.), junior goaltender Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior defender Jonathan Pires (Medford, Mass.).

The MASCAC Tournament MVP, Murtagh tied the school scoring record with 42 points (17G, 8A) this season. He is currently tied for the Division III lead in game-winning goals with eight, and is also tied for 14th in goals and tied for 15th in scoring. Murtagh is third all-time at Bridgewater State with 72 career points and ranks second in goals with 31.

Campbell and Fleck anchor the midfield for the Bears. Campbell has two goal and two assists for six points, while Fleck checks in with six assists.

Keddie and Pires are an integral part of a BSU defensive unit that has limited opponents to an average of just 4.8 shots on goal per game. Pires has produced two goals and six assists for ten points, while Keddie has recorded a pair of assists.

Jepson has played every minute of all 21 games this season. He is currently 17-3-1 with 12 shutouts, a 0.65 goals against average, 86 saves and a .860 save percentage. Jepson has already set single-season program marks for wins, shutouts and consecutive shutouts (6).

MIT is under the guidance of head coach Ken Bovell. Bovell, in his first years as the leader of the Engineers and recently named NEWMAC Coach of the Year, led the Cardinal and Gray to an outstanding mark of 16-2-1 (.868) and 7-0-0 in NEWMAC action. Bovell took over as the Engineers head coach at the beginning of this season after being a member of the program as the assistant coach over the past two season.

The Engineers are led by NEWMAC Athlete of the Year, senior midfielder Sean Bingham (Gardn City, N.Y.). Bingham, who is MIT’s all-time leader in points (156) and goals (68) has had a career year with 19 markers and a career-high 10 assists to go along with seven game winning goal in 18 games played for the Engineers this season. Bingham is ranked fifth in the country in points this year with 48, while also being noted in points per game (4th - 2.67), goals (8th - 19) and third in game-winners (7).

In the other first round matchup in Cambridge on Saturday, Plattsburg State (14-4-3) will take on Bowdoin College (10-3-4) at 1:30 PM. The winners will advance to the second round on Sunday at 1:00 PM also at MIT.
