Filipe Gomes Named MASCAC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the third time this season, Bridgewater State University freshman forward Filipe Gomes has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.

A native of Fogo, Cape Verde, Gomes scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner in Bridgewater State's 2-0 shutout victory over Worcester State University this past weekend as the Bears secured the #5 seed in the MASCAC Tournament.

In 12 games this season, Gomes has amassed eight goals and five assists for 21 points. He is tied for second in the MASCAC in assists and ranks fourth in scoring and fifth in goals.

Gomes' eight goals are the most by a BSU rookie since Simao Mendes also netted eight in 2009.

The BSU men's soccer team heads into the MASCAC Tournament with an overall record of 14-3-1. The 14 wins mark the Bears' highest single-season total since the 1993 squad finished 15-4-1. Bridgewater will travel to #3 seed Mass. Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening for a seven o'clock quarterfinal round matchup with the Buccaneers.
