Men's Soccer Falls to MIT, 5-1, in NCAA Tournament Opening Round

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University Bears dropped a 5-1 decision to MIT in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge.

The Bears end the season with an overall record of 17-4-1. The 17 wins is the highest total in program history. The host Engineers improve to 17-2-1 and will advance to the second round on Sunday against either Plattsburgh State or Bowdoin College.

Senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) staked Bridgewater State to the 1-0 lead with his school record tying 18th goal of the season in the 31st minute. Murtagh headed a cross from freshman forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) inside the left post.

With the goal, Murtagh eclipsed David Son's single-season scoring record of 42 points set back in 1991. Murtagh, who finished the season with 44 points, also equaled Son's 1991 mark of 18 goals.

That would be the lone highlight of the game for the Bears who surrendered five unanswered goals the rest of the way.

Senior midfielder Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Engineers, while classmate Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) added a goal and a pair of assists. Freshman forward Wesley Woo (Palo Alto, Calif.) and senior midfielder Joe Schuman (West Hartford, Conn.) also found the back of the net for MIT.

The Engindeer held a 21-9 shot advantage as well as a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.

Senior Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) made two saves to record his 16th win between the pipes for MIT, while junior Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) turned aside four shots in goal for Bridgewater State.
