Men's Soccer Posts Fifth Straight Shutout

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.

Senior forwards Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) and Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) scored for the Bears, who were also the recipients of an own goal. Bridgewater State improves to 12-2-1 on the season while UMass slips to 7-6-1.

Chenard got the Bears on the board with his third goal of the season as he found the left corner of the net off a feed from senior midfielder Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) in the ninth minute of play.

Bridgewater made it a 2-0 game with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half. A UMD defender attempted to clear the ball out of harm's way, but deflected the ball into the Corsair net.

Murtagh potted his team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 81st minute to put the finishing touches on the scoring. Murtagh headed in a corner kick into the right side of the net off a service by freshman midfielder Diego DelasCasas (Miami, Fla.).

BSU junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made three saves to post his fifth straight shutout, ninth of the season and 16th of his career. Jepson, who extended his shutout streak to 490 minutes, equaled the program record of five straight shutouts set in 1988.

The Bears were outshot in the contest by margin of 18-12, but held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Andre Reis (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman JP Rosa (Boston, Mass.) made two saves apiece between the pipes for the Corsairs.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon with conference games. The Bears travel to Westfield State University for a noontime MASCAC game with the Owls, while the Corsairs entertain Little East foe Plymouth State University at one.

Notes: Murtagh (27 goals, 6 assists) became just the seventh player in program history to reach the 60-point milestone....The Bears' 12 wins are the most since the 2010 season (13-6).
