Men's Soccer Blanks Wheaton, 2-0

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) and senior defender Patrick Horgan (Plymouth, Mass.) each scored to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Southeastern Massachusetts rival Wheaton College on Wednesday night.

Bridgewater State improves to 10-2-1 on the season with the win, while Wheaton slips to 8-7 overall. The Bears defeated the Lyons for just the third time in the all-time series. Wheaton holds a 19-3 advantage, although the two teams have split the last six meetings.

After a scoreless first half, the Bears broke the ice in the 50th minute. Senior forward Charlie Lawson (Plympton, Mass.) sent a through ball to Murtagh who buried a one-timer into the left side of the net from 12 yards out.

The goal marked Murtagh's tenth of the season (and sixth game-winner) which equals a career high. He also increased his season scoring output to 24 points which is a new career best.

Eight minutes later, Horgan converted a corner kick from senior midfielder Sawyer Fleck (Foxboro, Mass.) to give the Bears the 2-0 lead. For Horgan, the goal was his second of the season.

BSU junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made four saves to post his third straight shutout, seventh of the season and 14th of his career.

Wheaton finished with a slight 13-11 shot advantage, while Bridgewater held the 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Erik Wisniewski (Salisbury, Mass.) turned aside three shots in his first start and appearance of the season.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Fitchburg State University on Saturday afternoon for a 1:30 MASCAC game with the Falcons.

Notes: Murtagh increased his career scoring total to 54 points (24G, 6A) as he moved past Scott Floeck (1980-82) into ninth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list.
