Murtagh, Gomes Lead Men's Soccer to 4-0 Shutout of Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman forward Filipe Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde) each scored twice to help the Bears of Bridgewater State University defeat the Vikings of Salem State University, 4-0, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Bears improve to 9-2-1 on the season and remain unbeaten atop the MASCAC standings with a 4-0 record.  The Vikings drop to 0-12 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.

It didn't take long for the first place Bears to get on the board against the Vikings as Murtagh put home a loose ball in front of the Salem State net in just the second minute of play. Later in the half, Gomes netted his sixth goal of the season to up Bridgewater State's lead to 2-0. Junior forward Colby LeSage (Maynard, Mass.) picked up the assist on the goal as he threaded the ball through the Vikings' defense to set up Gomes.

Beginning the second half with a 2-0 lead, the Bears immediately added some insurance as Gomes and Murtagh each netted their second goals of the game to give Bridgewater State a comfortable 4-0 lead. Gomes barely snuck one past sophomore goalie Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) in the opening minutes of the stanza, while Murtagh pulled Enos out of position for the easy score. Gomes had an opportunity to complete the hat trick in the 69th minute but was denied by a diving Enos.

Bridgewater State held a 23-6 shot advantage for the game as well as a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

Enos made six saves in the match but earned the loss.

BSU junior goaltender Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) had an easy day in net as he only saw three shots, saving all of them. Jepson now has six shutouts on the season and 13 for his career.

Salem State will look to win their first game of the season on October 17th when they host the Rams of Framingham State at 3:00 p.m. The Bears will travel to Wheaton College on October 14th to take on the Lyons at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Murtagh, who finished with two goals and an assist, increased his career totals to 23 goals and six assists for 52 points. He is currently tied for sixth among the Bears' all-time leaders in goals and tied for tenth in points....Gomes' seven goals are the most by a BSU rookie since Simao Mendes potted eight goals in 2009.
