Men's Soccer Plays to 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University and Roger Williams University played to a 0-0 double overtime draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears are now 8-2-1 on the season, while the Hawks go to 4-6-1. Bridgewater is 10-8-3 all-time versus Roger Williams dating back to 1980.

Shots were even for the game at 19 apiece, while the Bears held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

BSU junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made two saves to post his fifth shutout of the season and 12th of his career. Junior Carsten Fredrickson (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) made six saves to record his third shutout of the campaign.

Both teams had multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net.

Less than five minutes into the contest, BSU senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) whistled a shot wide of the right post off a feed from freshman Filipe Gomes (Boston, Mass.).

Sophomore midfielder Sean Janson (Avon, Conn.) slipped a shot wide of the far post off a perfect setup from sophomore forward Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 17th minute to nearly put the Hawks on the board.

BSU senior midfielder Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) made a great run three minutes into the second half as he beat two defenders but ripped a shot wide of the right post.

Janson had another great opportunity in the 64th minute but was unable to find the mark as his shot sailed wide of the left post.

Gomes slipped a short cross along the goal line following a header attempt by Murtagh in the 65th minute, but the ball was cleared out of harm's way by a RWU defender.

In the 71st minute, Frederickson made a diving stop on a Murtagh header attempt labeled for inside the near post following a long right side throw-in from senior defender Nicholas Keddie (Abington, Mass.).

Gomes hand-cuffed Frederickson with shot from 25 yards out in the 79th minute which led to a corner kick, but the Bears were unable to capitalize.

Jepson made a terrific diving save on a shot by junior midfielder Chris Chieffo (North Haven, Conn.) in the 88th minute. Moments later, Murtagh had the goalie beat but sailed a shot over the crossbar.

The best opportunity in overtime came in the second session off the foot of BSU freshman midfielder Kane Moran (Attadale, Western Australia). Moran made a short run down the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 25-yards that was headed for inside the left post. Frederickson, however, made a sensational diving stop deflecting the ball just wide of the post.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears travel to Salem State University for a one o'clock MASCAC game with the Vikings, while the Hawks entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Salve Regina University at three.
