Gomes Nets Game-Winner as Men's Soccer Blanks Clark, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman striker Filipe Gomes (Boston, Mass.) continued the impressive start to his collegiate career by scoring the game's lone goal and the visiting Bears posted a 1-0 win over Clark University in non-league men's soccer action on Wednesday evening.

Gomes, the two-time Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Rookie of the Week and reigning ECAC Rookie of the Week, recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the season off of a free kick from about 30-yards out in the 31st minute, lifting the Bears (6-1) to their sixth straight victory.

For Clark (2-5-1) meanwhile, the Cougars have now dropped five straight heartbreaking decisions – four of which have come by one goal, including a pair of double overtime defeats.

BSU held a 15-9 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks for the contest. Senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) led all players with five shots, while Gomes and senior midfielder Kolin Campbell (Norton, Mass.) registered three shots apiece.

Junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) improved to 6-1 with his fourth shutout of the season and 11th of his career.

Junior Alistair Richardson (Tolland, Conn.), who was making his third start of the season, stopped seven shots in goal for the Scarlet and White.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with conference contests. Bridgewater State hosts Massachusetts Maritime, while the Cougars look to get back on track with a visit to Coast Guard.
