Men's Soccer Posts 3-0 Shutout Over Plymouth State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 shutout victory over non-conference for Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears (3-1) dominated play from start to finish, outshooting the Panthers by a healthy margin of 31-4.

Murtagh got the Bears on the board in the 12th minute as he knocked in the rebound of a Kane Moran (Attadale, Western Australia) shot. Moran, a freshman midfielder, headed the ball off the crossbar following a long service from junior defender Jonathan Pires (Medford, Mass.).

Freshman forward Filipe Gomes (Boston, Mass.) sent Murtagh in on a breakaway in the 72nd minute. Murtagh chipped the ball over the charging Plymouth State netminder and deposited a shot into the unguarded net for his fourth goal of the season.

Gomes extended the BSU advantage to 3-0 in the 86th minute with his first collegiate goal. The Bears' rookie buried a shot into the top left corner of the net off a direct kick from twenty yards out.

Along with their decided shot advantage, the Bears also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goaltender Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) stopped all three shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career.

Senior keeper Danny Marsh (Farmington, Conn.) made nine saves between the pipes for the Panthers.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Rhode Island College on Wednesday for a six o'clock game with the Anchormen. The Panthers entertain Tufts University tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at four.
