Men's Soccer Captures Husky Fall Classic Title

GORHAM, Maine -- The Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory over host University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon as the Bears captured the 2015 Husky Fall Classic title.

Senior defender Nicholas Keddie (Abington, Mass.) garnered tournament MVP honors. Keddie anchored a BSU defense which allowed only eight shots on frame during the two-day tournament and gave up just one goal (penalty kick).

Senior forward Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) and senior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) and  were also named to the All-Tournament Team for the Bears. Chenard scored a pair of goals in today's win over the Huskies. Murtagh assisted on Chenard's first goals and also scored twice in the Bears' 2-0 win over Coast Guard on Friday.

Junior defender Jonathan Pires (Medford, Mass.) got Bridgewater on the board in the eighth minute with a header off a direck kick from senior midfielder Sawyer Fleck (Foxboro, Mass.).

The Bears outshot the Huskies 13-0 in the opening stanza and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Chenard staked BSU to a two-goal advantage as he tapped home a cross from Murtagh.

A Keddie throw-in helped set up Chenard's second goal in the 56th minute. A USM defender mishandled the throw-in and headed it directly to Chenard who, in turn, headed the ball into the back of the net.

Southern Maine broke-up the shutout bid on a questionable penalty kick call in the 70th minute. Junior defender Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) converted the PK to account for the final tally of 3-1.

BSU junior goaltender Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made three saves to record his second win of the season.

For the game, the Bears outshot the Huskies 21-6 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman keeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine) was busy between the pipes for the Huskies as he made 11 saves.

The Bears (2-1) are off until next Saturday afternoon when they host Plymouth State University at four.
