Murtagh's Two Goals Lifts Men's Soccer to 2-0 Win Over Coast Guard

GORHAM, Maine – Junior forward Conor Murtagh (Walpole, Mass.) netted two goals and freshman forward Filipe Gomes (Boston, Mass.) collected a pair of assists to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at the Husky Fall Classic hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

Bridgewater improves to 1-1 on the young season with the win, while Coast Guard falls to 0-2.

Murtagh, the reigning MASCAC Player of the Year, staked BSU to an early 1-0 lead as he converted off an assist from Gomes in the eighth minute. Gomes dribbled down the right side and sent a cross inside the 18 to Murtagh who cut in front of a defender and toe-poked a shot into the top right corner of the net.

Bridgewater would maintain the one-goal advantage throughout the rest of the first half.

Just 3:29 into second stanza, Gomes connected with Murtagh once again. After beating a defender one-on-one, Gomes sent a cross into the box that somehow found its way to Murtagh stationed on the weak side. Murtagh corralled the ball and ripped a low shot that went off a defender and trickled over the goal line.

BSU junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made four saves to record his first shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. Sophomore Jake Sorenson (Oakdale, Conn.) turned aside three shots in the setback for Coast Guard.

Both teams finished with nine shots in the game, while Coast Guard held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Husky Fall Classic continues on Saturday with Bridgewater State taking on host Southern Maine at four and coast Guard battling Westfield State University at 1:30.
