Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to #7 Brandeis in Season Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Bridgewater State University in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore midfielder Christian Hernandez (Revere, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie in the 81st minute to give the seventh-ranked Judges the win. Having no clear passing targets, Hernandez saw an opening in the net and pulled the trigger from 25 yards out for his first collegiate goal.

Bridgewater State mounted an attack late, forcing a corner kick in the 88th minute, but could not convert as the Judges held on.

In his first start, Brandeis sophomore goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse (Suffield, Conn.) had three saves and earned his first collegiate win and shutout. BSU junior netminder Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) had two stops in the losing effort.

The Judges outshot the Bears, 14-7, though shots on goal were three-all. Junior midfielder Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass.) had five shots to lead Brandeis, while freshman forward Filipe Gomes (Boston, Mass.) paced the Bears with four.

Brandeis had the best opportunity to score in the first half when a header by junior forward Zach Vieira (Andover, Mass.) from six yards away sailed high of the net.

Brandeis is back in action on Friday when they take on Hardin-Simmons in San Antonio, Texas. The Judges will also face #6-ranked Trinity University on Saturday. Bridgewater State heads to Southern Maine for the Husky Fall Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Bears take on Coast Guard on Friday afternoon at 1:30 and the host Huskies on Saturday at four.
